The Sümela Monastery, which was founded on a steep rock on the outskirts of Montenegro dominating the Altindere Valley, within the borders of Altindere village of Maçka district of Trabzon, is popularly referred to by the name of “Virgin Mary”. Located about 300 meters high from the valley, the structure continued its tradition of establishing monasteries outside the city, in forests, caves and watersides. Founded in the name of the Virgin Mary, the monastery is said to have taken the name “Sumela” from the word “melas” meaning “black”. Although it is thought that this name came from the dark-colored Montenegrins where the monastery was founded, the word Sumela may be linked to the Black color of the depiction of Mary here.

The main sections of Sumela Monastery are; bedrock church, several chapels, kitchen, student rooms, guesthouse, library and holy ayazma. The community of these structures was built on a fairly large area. The large Aqueduct, which appears to have brought water to the entrance of the monastery, is leaning against the hillside. Much of this arch, which is very eyed, has been demolished today.

The interior and exterior walls of the Rock Church that formed the main unit of the monastery and the chapel adjacent to it are equipped with frescoes. In the wall overlooking the courtyard inside the Rock Church III. The existence of frescoes from the Alexios period has been identified. The frescoes in the chapel are 18. it is dated to the beginning of the century and three layers made in three separate cycles are seen. The frescoes of the lowest layer are of superior quality.

The scenes taken from the Bible are the main subjects of the frescoes, which were taken from place to place in Sümela Monastery and which have a very ruined appearance. They are depictions of the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary.
